EPA’s Clean Water Act 316b
EPA’s Clean Water Act 316(b)
Hendrick Screen has the 316(b) solution.
Impact of 316(b): The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established standards for cooling water intake structures under section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act. The new regulation requires best technology standards to minimize adverse impacts to endangered fish, shellfish and other forms of marine life.
316(b) affects roughly 1,065 existing facilities that are designed to withdraw at least 2 million gallons of cooling water per day from lakes, rivers, or oceans to cool their plants. Of these facilities, many industrial sectors are affected:
- Aluminum manufacturing
- Electric generating plants
- Pulp and paper mills
- Chemical manufacturing plants
- Iron and steel manufacturing
- Petroleum refineries
- Food processing
Solution: Based on their studies, the EPA concluded that the wedgewire water intake screen construction to be an effective technology to reduce impingement and entrainment of aquatic organisms.
Hendrick Screen offers several 316(b) wedgewire compliant options such as T-intakes, half intakes, drum screens, and flat panels, in a variety of metal options. Our knowledgeable engineering group can ensure you have the right water intake screen for your application.
